The Arkansas Department of Education, Office of Comprehensive School Health is recruiting 30 schools to participate in the Health Action Team (HAT) project. The HAT project provides a rewarding opportunity for schools to utilize a team approach to improve the health outcomes of school-aged children in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and tobacco education. Currently, in Arkansas, 104 schools have been trained and have established HAT teams in the area of nutrition. The Office of Comprehensive School Health would like the schools to participate in this exciting project!

Schools that agree to participate in the Physical Activity or Tobacco training will receive a $1,000 planning and implementation award to be used toward purchasing supplies, resources, curriculum, physical education equipment, etc. In order to be eligible to participate in this program, each school will be required to:

1) Create or have an established interdisciplinary school team of six (6) persons.
2) Attend a one-day training in Little Rock on September 20, 2000, for the Tobacco Education and Prevention training or September 21, 2000, for the Physical Activity training.
3) Submit a HAT grant application, annual plan, budget summary and grant assurances form to the Office of Comprehensive School Health by October 20, 2000.
4) Attend the HAT Showcase during the Spring of 2001. Teams will provide a written summary and set up a display that highlights the program's accomplishments. Travel expenses may be taken out of grant funds.
5) Submit a final progress report to the Arkansas Department of Education, Office of Comprehensive School Health by June 29, 2001.

Registration forms will be accepted in the order they are received. There are only 15 team positions available in each of the two trainings so SIGN UP NOW!
