Governor Mike Huckabee and the Selective Service System are joining forces to bring awareness of the registration requirement to the attention of young men across the State of Arkansas. To emphasize the importance of registration, Governor Huckabee has proclaimed September as Selective Service Registration Awareness Month in conjunction with the Selective Service National Awareness Drive (September 11-22, 2000). A copy of the Governors proclamation is included in the hard copy mailed to the district.
Governor Huckabee would like the young men in our schools to be aware that they are required by law to register with the Selective Service when they turn 18. Proof of registration is a prerequisite for obtaining federal and state student loans, job training, federal and state employment, and citizenship (for immigrants). Registration information can be submitted by 17-year-old males, and it will be held by Selective Service until their 18th birthday.
Selective Service System Registrars have been appointed in many of our schools, but if your school does not have a Registrar, I encourage your high school principal to appoint someone. The Registrar is the point of contact for the Selective Service and can provide information to young men on how to register. The most popular method is to register on the Internet at www.sss.gov. Additional information for participation in the Registrar Program may be obtained by contacting the Selective Service Regional Office at 770-590-6664 (Fax: 770-590-6774).
Please take action to assure that our students are not denied any benefits because they are unaware of the requirement to register with the Selective Service.
