The Board of Directors of the Arkansas Association of Middle Level Education (AAMLE) and the Southwestern Bell Company will once again be presenting The Shannon Wright Award in 2001.
The Shannon Wright Award is named in honor of the middle school teacher who was tragically killed in a school shooting in 1997. The award is to recognize a middle school that exemplifies the characteristics necessary to produce a high performing, standards-based, middle level education program. Any AAMLE member school that serves students in any configuration, that would include any grade levels of 5 through 9, is eligible for application.
Southwestern Bell is committed to the education of young adolescents and has long been a supporter of middle level education in Arkansas. Therefore, they are committing a $5,000 cash incentive to the school chosen to receive The Shannon Wright Award. The money must be used to further promote best middle level practices.
Schools may request applications for nomination by contacting Mr. Harry Branch at 870-741-0590. Schools may also receive information by writing to the AAMLE at P.O. Box 2120, Little Rock, Arkansas 72201. The last day to apply is December 15, 2000. The Shannon Wright Award will be presented at the AAMLE Conference in Hot Springs in April 2001. A major focus of the 2001 conference will be support for the Smart Step initiative.
