We have received a number of inquiries regarding how “academically engaged time” requirements of the educational standards affect the administration of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) during school time.

Student participation in the ASVAB testing procedures including the interpretation of test results are important elements of a school testing program. It is necessary to obtain objective measurement for use in planning instruction for academic improvement and for student use in short term and long range educational career planning and goal setting.

The Department of Education supports the American Association for Counseling and Development in recommending that all secondary schools integrate the ASVAB as a component of the school testing program. The administration schedule of the ASVAB test should be left to the discretion of the local school district.

We commit ourselves to this position, not only because the ASVAB is a quality evaluation tool offered at no cost, but also because it is a vital part of the success of our national defense under the present volunteer military system.
