The office of Congressman Vic Synder recently released information encouraging high school students who live in the state's 2nd Congressional District to submit artwork to the 2001 Congressional High School Art Competition. The annual competition gives one student from each Congressional District in the United States the opportunity to have his or her work displayed in the nation's Capitol in Washington, D. C. The state's 2nd Congressional District includes Conway, Faulkner, Perry, Pulaski, Saline, Van Buren, White, and Yell counties. High school students who live in these counties are eligible for the competition.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) Department of Art will administer and judge the local Congressional competition. All artwork submitted to the competition must be original and may include work from the following mediums: paintings, drawings, collages and prints (including lithographs, silk screens, monotypes, reliefs, and intaglios). Photography and computer-generated works have been added as new categories to the art competition for 2000. Masks and sculptures are not permitted.

Students may submit one work per person. Entries submitted in the local competition will not require a frame; however, the winning entry must be framed when mailed to Washington, D. C. The winning piece may not be larger than 32-by-32 inches (including the frame). An artwork release/student entry form must accompany each work submitted. The entry form must be signed by the teacher and the student to certify originality of the art piece. Failure to comply with all the conditions of the competition will result in disqualification. Call Maria Hoskins in Congressman Synder's Little Rock district office at (501) 324-5973 or visit http://www.house.gov/shadegg/artshow for more details and to obtain the form needed to enter.

The deadline for the competition is Tuesday, May 7, 2001, and all entries must be received by the UALR Department of Art by 5 p.m. on this day. The winner of the competition will be announced at a reception on May 18, 2001, at 6 p.m. in the UALR Art Department Gallery. Mail or deliver entries to 2001 Congressional High School Art Competition, c/o UALR Art Department Gallery, 2801 South University, Little Rock, AR 72204-1099.

Students who want their work returned must provide a postage-paid shipping carton or make arrangements for pick up with the UALR Department of Art. To contact the UALR Department of Art, call Brad Cushman at (501) 569-8977.
