The Arkansas Department of Education, the Arkansas State Library, and the Arkansas Reading Association are pleased to announce the results of the 2001 Charlie May Simon Children’s Book Award and the 2001 Arkansas Diamond Primary Book Award. More than 51,000 ballots have been cast and the results have been tabulated. The books receiving the choices of the voting body of students are as follows:
CHARLIE MAY SIMON CHILDREN’S BOOK AWARD
FLYING SOLO by Ralph Fletcher is the winner of the 2000-2001 Charlie May Simon Children’s Book Award. It is published by Clarion.
RIDING FREEDOM by Pam Munoz Ryan is the Honor Book for this year. It is published by Scholastic.
ARKANSAS DIAMOND PRIMARY BOOK AWARD
A HOME FOR SPOOKY by Gloria Rand, illustrated by Ted Rand, is the winner of the 2000-2001 Arkansas Diamond Primary Book Award. It is published by Henry Holt.
NICKY AND THE BIG, BAD WOLVES by Valeri Gorbachev is the Honor Book this year. It is published by North-South Books.
The awards are under the sponsorship of the Arkansas Department of Education, the Arkansas State Library, and the Arkansas Reading Association, with support from other cooperating organizations.
