The Board of Directors of the Arkansas Association of Middle Level Education (AAMLE) and Southwestern Bell will be accepting nominations for The Shannon Wright Award through December 15, 2001.

The Shannon Wright Award is presented each year to a distinguished middle level program in Arkansas. Middle level is defined as a program in any school that serves students in any grade configuration that includes any of levels 5-8.

The award will be based on the eight principles from the 1989 report from the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development entitled "Turning Points." Performance of the school in relation to the Smart Step Initiative will be an integral consideration.

The award carries a $5000 cash incentive from Southwestern Bell to be used by the school to further promote the development of a high performing, standards based middle level program.

All AAMLE member schools are eligible for nomination for the 2002 Shannon Wright Award. Schools may request applications for membership and nominating forms by contacting Harry Branch or by writing directly to the AAMLE at the address below:
