On October 30, 2001, President George W. Bush along with U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige and U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi launched "Lessons of Liberty," an initiative to bring America's veterans and students together in the classroom. This joint venture encourages public and private elementary and secondary schools to invite veterans into their classrooms. In fact, President Bush has proclaimed November 11-17 National Veterans Awareness Week. On behalf of this initiative, all local education agencies are encouraged to invite veterans to participate in events at each and every school. "Lessons of Liberty" will allow students to focus on the true meaning of patriotism as they explore America's history. During each visit to the classroom, veterans will have an opportunity to interact and share experiences with students and explain why Veterans Day is such a meaningful holiday.

As a result of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, it is imperative that the future leaders of this great nation understand the true meaning of freedom and democracy. Interacting with men and women who have fought on the battlefields of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Persian Gulf will give students a better understanding of the sacrifices our armed forces are making today.

The week of November 11 through 17 is also American Education Week and International Education Week. Events that combine "Lessons of Liberty" with these other commemorative efforts can provide students the historical context of the current global war on terrorism and the international humanitarian efforts to assist the embattled people of Afghanistan.

The American Legion along with other veterans service organizations have pledged their full cooperation in President Bush's effort to bring together students and true American heroes. No student or veteran should miss this opportunity to bring our past and future together in America's classrooms.
