The Department is pleased to cooperate with the National Science Foundation (NSF) in conducting the nomination and selection process for the 2002 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. The Program identifies outstanding mathematics and science teachers, kindergarten through 12th grade, in each state and the four U.S. jurisdictions. These teachers will serve as models for their colleagues and will be leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education.

The Presidential Award includes:

(1) The unrestricted award of $7,500 to each teacher;
(2) Gifts to the awardees and their schools from donors;
(3) Recognition events in Washington, DC, which will include:
(a) an awards ceremony and presidential citation,
(b) meetings with leaders in government and education,
(c) sessions to share ideas and teaching experiences, and
(d) receptions and banquets to honor recipients.

Recognition is given to K-12 teachers in four award groups: (1) elementary mathematics, (2) elementary science, (3) secondary mathematics, and (4) secondary science. Up to four Presidential Awards may be given in 2002 in each state and the four U.S. jurisdictions.
