An educational media package that includes a teacher's guide and videotape, for students in grades 5 through 12, is being provided by the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation as a gift to all Arkansas schools.

The teacher's guide meets the guidelines and mandate of the Arkansas Social Studies Curriculum Framework, and legislation (ACT 326) enacted in 1997, regarding the requirement of African American history and training in racial and ethnic awareness.

The Elaine Riot is about a little-known, but major event in Arkansas' history that occurred in October 1919. Teachers can use this material to provide students with insights into associated issues of race relations, Southern and national history, and methods and techniques of historical research. This resource will help students acquire a better understanding of history, expand their knowledge, and develop skills needed to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society.

Comments about this educational resource, and requests for obtaining a free copy within 6-8 weeks can be sent by e-mail to elainevideo@wrfoundation.org.
