Licensure Renewal
The purpose of this Director’s Memo is to clarify the requirements for renewing a teaching license for teachers/administrators whose license was effective when the Department of Education transitioned to the new licensure system on January 1, 2002.
Individuals holding a current teaching license at the time of this transition, will be renewed under the old requirements as follows:
a. Submit an application for renewal of the teaching license.
b. Document two years of teaching experience out of the last six-years.
OR
c. Document teaching the last year the license was effective.
OR
d. Document six-hours of coursework in one of the licensure areas.
e. Successfully complete the required background checks through the
Arkansas State Police and FBI, if a background check has not already been completed. (Only one background check is required unless a teacher/administrator is changing school districts.)
The new license will be valid for five years with the effective date of the license being January 1 of the year following the expiration date of the old license.
Individuals receiving their first standard Arkansas teaching license as of January 1, 2002, will receive a five year teaching license and shall renew that teaching license according to the new rules and regulations currently being developed.
