The Teachers as Leaders Science Academies, sponsored by the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory (SEDL) and the Southwest Consortium for the Improvement of Mathematics and Science Teaching (SCIMAST) are exciting, fun and designed for secondary science classroom teachers. All academies use the Benchmarks and Science Standards as the central component for science content through thematic teaching. The academies, listed at the web address below, provide experiential learning in real world settings with content experts who assist teachers with classroom implementation.
Science Academies provide teachers with intense professional development that spans over two years. One week of instruction occurs each summer with follow-up sessions each fall. SCIMAST also provides teacher participants with housing and food in the summer sessions, in addition to a $250 stipend. Additionally, SCIMAST Academies provide teachers with state professional development/continuing education credit hours.
Detailed information for each academy can be found at the following web address: http://www.sedl.org/scimast/2002_academies/science/index.html.
