The Arkansas Department of Education, Special Education, will provide training on the use of Indirect Services as a service delivery option for students with disabilities. Under this option, students with disabilities receive their special education instruction and services in the general education classroom with the assistance of a Consultant Teacher. This special education professional provides special education services by assisting and problem solving with the student's general education teacher(s) on a regular basis.

The one-day training will be provided at the following locations and dates:

February 20, 2003, at the Great Rivers Education Service Cooperative, West Helena

March 5, 2003, at Texarkana Community College, Texarkana, Texas

March 20, 2003, at the Northcentral Arkansas Education Service Center, Melbourne

All training sessions will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will conclude by 3:30 p.m.

This Indirect Services Basic Training will focus on the regulations governing Indirect Services, roles and responsibilities of general and special education teachers engaged in providing the services, and collaborative problem solving. Although geared toward professionals that have not attended a previous training, experienced Consultant Teachers may find it beneficial to attend with new partners.

Districts that choose to participate should send their personnel in "Indirect Services" building teams. These teams must consist of a special education teacher and at least one general educator. Since administrative support is critical to the success of this strategy, building administrators are highly encouraged to attend.

The training is provided to districts at no charge. Reimbursement for up to six substitutes per district will be available, if needed. Participants must attend the entire session to qualify for the reimbursement. In addition, the building administrator must attend or provide a letter of support for the Indirect Services program. Any additional expenses will be the responsibility of the participating school district.

Since there is limited space available at each site, only complete registrations will receive reservation confirmations. Be advised that a team is not registered if the form does not specify the names of both a general education teacher and a special education teacher. Teams must bring their letter of confirmation with them to the training. For questions about the training, please contact Lisa S. Johnson at 1-800-482-8437or (501) 663-3835 or by email at ljohnson@arkedu.k12.ar.us.

The attached registration form must be completed and returned no later than February 13, 2003. Confirmation notices will be sent to all registered attendees. Send the attached registration form to:
