The Department is pleased to cooperate with the White House and the National Science Foundation (NSF) in conducting the nomination and selection process for the 2003 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching (PAEMST). The PAEMST 2003 year will be for mathematics and science teachers of grades 7-12 only and the award will be increased to $10,000 UNRESTRICTED CASH AWARD paid directly to the awardee. Teachers of grades K-6 will be eligible for the Presidential Awards in 2004. Beginning in 2003, the competition will alternate each year between teachers of grades 7-12 and teachers of grades K-6. The applicants will use the revised video application in the PAEMST 2003 program. The self-nomination will no longer be accepted. The revised video application for 2003 will request a nomination from a supervisor, principal, teacher, colleague, parent, student, or member of the general public. The nomination form for 2003 can now be downloaded by clicking on the Nomination form link and the Application form can now be downloaded by clicking on the Application form link. The form will be submitted to the state coordinator and a copy sent to nominee. Please notify staff, students, and the general public about the Presidential Awards Program.
The Presidential Award includes:
(1) The unrestricted award of $10,000 cash award to each teacher,
(2) Gifts to the awardees and their schools from donors,
(3) Recognition events in Washington, D.C. in March 2004 which will include:
(a) an awards ceremony and presidential citation,
(b) meetings with leaders in government and education,
(c) sessions to share ideas and teaching experiences, and
(d) receptions and banquets to honor recipients
