The Arkansas Department of Education, Office of Comprehensive School Health and the Child Nutrition Unit are recruiting 35 schools to participate in the Health Action Team (H.A.T.) project. The H.A.T. project provides schools the opportunity to use a team approach to improve nutrition and physical activity outcomes for students. Currently 116 Arkansas schools have received H.A.T. training. These schools and any schools new to the project may apply for these nutrition and physical activity funds for SY 2003-04.

Schools that agree to participate in the Nutrition and Physical Activity training will receive a $1200 planning and implementation mini-grant to be used toward completing grant activities and purchasing curriculum, supplies, resources, physical education equipment, etc. In order to be eligible to participate in this program, each school will be required to:

1) Create or have an established interdisciplinary school team of
six (6) persons. The team members should include a variety of
staff, i.e. at least two teachers, principal, counselor, nurse,
foodservice manager, physical education staff person, parent, or

Coordinated School Health Programs Demonstration Site, Paris
School District, P.O. BOX 645, PARIS, AR 72855, by July 31,
2003.
4) Attend H.A.T. Showcase during Spring 2004. Teams will provide a
written summary and set up a display that highlights the program
accomplishments. Travel expenses may be taken out of the grant
