Consider this memorandum as formal notification that Arkansas Public School Computer Network (APSCN) will initiate a policy change effective March 15, 2004, for using passwords to gain access through the APSCN GUI (Graphical User Interface) to the APSCN Student and Financial Management Systems and the Statewide Information System (SIS). This policy change is necessary to comply with security standards set by the Arkansas Office of Information and Technology.
Therefore the following procedures will be in effect beginning March 15, 2004:
1. At a minimum, passwords shall be changed every 90 days.
2. Passwords shall be at least eight characters in length and be a
mixture of alpha and non-alpha characters.
3. User passwords shall not be reused within six password changes.
As of March 15, the current passwords will be in effect for a 90-day period. After that time, the computer will display a prompt to change the password to meet the standards listed above. To change the current password immediately, log into the APSCN GUI using the current password and, at the Main Menu, choose Option 4. Follow the prompts to change the password.
