This is formal notification to all users of the Arkansas Public School Computer Network (APSCN) “Pine” e-mail system that the e-mail server will be permanently dismantled effective June 1, 2004. The server will then be used for mail filtering.

The Pine e-mail system is an antiquated system when compared to current technology and is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. It was initially set up for communication purposes during the APSCN startup years when few school districts had access to any type of e-mail server. Most districts now operate an e-mail server or have access to one at the local educational cooperative.

All Pine e-mail accounts begin with the APSCN user name followed by @mail.k12.ar.us. Any e-mail address different from this, is not a Pine e-mail account. Users relying on Pine e-mail to receive any communication such as mail from any of the state supported listservs, especially the FMS (Financial) or SMS (Student) listservs, will need to take the following actions:

1. Send an e-mail notification with a new e-mail address to all the contacts in the Pine e-mail list.

2. Unsubscribe the Pine e-mail address from any membership list. To unsubscribe from any of the state sponsored lists; type http://list.k12.ar.us in the Internet browser address. From the list on the screen choose which list to unsubscribe from and follow the on-screen instructions. NOTE: After choosing which list to unsubscribe from, when the next screen appears, scroll to the bottom of the screen and type in the new e-mail address to get options for unsubscribing from the list. Then remember to go back and subscribe to the lists using the new e-mail address by following the on-screen instructions.

3. Login to Pine e-mail and forward any old messages to be kept to the new e-mail address. Once the Pine e-mail server is converted for mail filtering, the Pine mail account will no longer be accessible to view old messages.

4. To forward Pine e-mail to the new e-mail account, send the FULL NAME, APSCN USER LOGIN, PINE E-MAIL ADDRESS and the NEW E-MAIL ADDRESS to: Shannon.booles@arkansas.gov. Shannon will use that information to set up an automatic forward of Pine e-mail to the new e-mail address through August 30, 2004. This will provide ample time to notify all contacts of the new e-mail address.

Address this matter as soon as possible to be certain that there is no loss of vital communication for the users within the district. Contact DIS APSCN LAN support by calling the DIS Call Center/Help Desk at 800-435-7989 for assistance setting up a mail server.
