This is to further clarify procedures for assessing Limited English Proficient (LEP) students new to U.S. schools this year.
If the LEP students, new to U.S. schools this year, were placed in the alternate assessment (portfolio) and the portfolios
1. were returned to the assessment company prior to the guidance* released on March 24, 2004 or
2. were returned prior to the district becoming aware of the guidance*
the district should complete the attached form and return it to Dr. Andre’ Guerrero, no later than May 7, 2004.
Based on the information submitted on the form, the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) will work with the Office of Research and Measurement to remove these students’ scores from the AYP calculation.
NOTE: LEP students new to U.S. schools this year are NOT required to participate in the regular or alternate assessment system (portfolio) literacy assessment.
Students ARE required to participate in the regular or alternate assessment system (portfolio) mathematics assessment.
