During this past summer, the U.S. Department of Education hosted several teacher workshops throughout the country. Workshop sessions featured some of the best teachers sharing research-based practices that have been successfully applied in the classroom to close the achievement gap and help all children excel. Due to positive feedback from these workshops and tremendous demand, U.S. Secretary of Education, Rod Paige, has decided to provide additional workshops this fall.

A Teacher-to-Teacher Fall Workshop will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 9, 2004, in the Wal-Mart Auditorium of the Shewmaker Center for Workforce Technology Building at Northwest Community College in Bentonville, Arkansas. Mr. Raymond Simon, Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education and former director of the Arkansas Department of Education, will be the keynote speaker.

This workshop is designed for mathematics teachers in grades K-8. Principals are encouraged to create a school team and attend along with the teachers. In addition to mathematics, sessions will feature topics such as school leadership, differentiated instruction, and the use of data to inform decision-making. The sessions will increase teachers' content knowledge and teaching skills for improving student achievement in mathematics.

Registration for the workshop is free; however, lodging is the responsibility of each participant. Breakfast and lunch on the day of the workshop will be provided. The seating capacity for the Wal-Mart Auditorium is limited to 120. Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information about the workshop and the online registration only, visit the website at http://www.teacherquality.us/TeacherToTeacher/Workshops.asp.

This workshop will offer teachers a chance to share and learn from other teachers about strategies that have been effective in helping diverse student populations attain high academic performance and close the achievement gap.

Please share this information with school district mathematics specialists who have had high-quality professional development experiences.
