The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) would like to remind district personnel that pursuant to Act 326 of 1997 and Ark. Code Ann. § 6-16-121, all teachers should be incorporating African-American history into the social studies curriculum. February is Black History month, and would be an excellent time to make a determined effort in this regard. The ADE website has an extensive listing of resources for African-American studies which can be accessed at http://arkedu.state.ar.us/africanamerican/index.html.

The attachment contains additional resources for incorporating African-American history into the social studies curriculum throughout the year.

Any teacher who has developed a good lesson or discovered additional resources, is encouraged to share with other social studies instructors throughout the state through the social studies list serve at acss@list.k12.ar.us, by emailing mherrick@arkedu.k12.ar.us or mailing to
