The Arkansas Department of Education, Special Education, Project for Children with Deafblindness, in collaboration with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) is offering a stipend of $625 to attend a graduate level course on children with low incidence disabilities at UALR. The course will be offered this June and July 2005. It is web based except for three (3) days required class attendance on the UALR campus.

Course Description:

SPED 7393. Special Topics: Introduction to Children with Low Incidence Disabilities, Including Deafblindness:

This UALR graduate course provides an overview of infants and school-aged children with multiple/severe disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and dual sensory loss. Etiologies, communication methods, early intervention, family involvement, orientation and mobility, technology, behavior management, and transition are topics of emphasis. This course is designed for currently employed teachers, professionals in related fields, students in teacher preparation programs, and students in orientation and mobility programs. The presenter is Dr. Sherry Shaw.

Class Schedule: June 13-July 9, 2005, over the Internet
Three face-to-face mandatory classes on:

Monday, June 13, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, June 25, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Saturday, July 9, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

A stipend for $625 is available for 8 people. The applicant must agree to the following:

(1) Obtain a B or better grade for the course, and
(2) Commit to work in an Arkansas public education agency at the completion of this course for a period of time not less than one semester.

A stipend application will be provided at the beginning of the class to approved applicants. Upon successful completion of the class, the stipend application and a W-9 will be forwarded to the Arkansas Department of Education, Special Education Unit to process the stipend payment.

Students will need to be admitted to UALR’s graduate school prior to registration in the class, so apply early. Information about applying to UALR as a non-degree seeking student can be found at the website http://gradschool.ualr.edu/prospectivestudents.html
