The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) and the State Mathematics Specialists invite schools to participate in the Arkansas Mathematics Coaches’ Training for Grades K-8 to be held June 27-July 1, 2005, at the Hilton Little Rock Metro Center, 925 South University Avenue.
The Mathematics Coaches’ Training has been developed with a strong research base and will be facilitated by nationally recognized consultants from the Marilyn Burns Education Associates. The primary responsibilities of the mathematics coach or specialist are to demonstrate exemplary classroom mathematics practices, observe and coach classroom teachers, plan and conduct local mathematics professional development, and collect, analyze and report school data to administrators and others as needed or requested.
Participation in the summer 2005 Mathematics Coaches Training requires:
* Administrator support indicated by signature on the commitment form
* Qualified personnel that meets high standards for mathematics teaching and has full or partial release time to coach other classroom teachers in the teaching of mathematics
* Participation by the mathematics coach/specialist in training that extends his/her own mathematics competencies
* Willing to network with other mathematics coaches in developing, implementing, and researching standards-based teaching in the classroom
* Assurance that the school or district math coach/specialist will be provided with release time for ongoing professional development
* Agreement to attend a fall and spring follow-up session
Priority for participation will be given to Title I schools in School Improvement. Upon acceptance of the required registration and commitment forms, Title I School Improvement funds will directly pay the registration fee for the mathematics coach from Title I schools designated in School Improvement. Expenses for travel, lodging, and evening meals for all participants are the responsibility of the participating school or district.
Mathematics coaches from all other schools are encouraged to apply and may be accepted for participation based on availability and total enrollment. All expenses, including registration, will be the responsibility of those schools. Information for submitting payment will be included in the acceptance letter. Notification of acceptance will be mailed by May 10, 2005.
Attached are the registration and commitment forms for participation in the Arkansas Mathematics Coaches Training for Grades K-8. Interested school districts must submit the attached application and forms – do NOT send payment - by April 29, 2005 to:
