National Youth Volunteer Week for 2005 will be the week of April 11th. Governor Mike Huckabee has signed a proclamation declaring April 15, 2005, as Arkansas Youth Volunteer Recognition Day. The text of the proclamation is attached.

During the year 2005, as in other years, youth in the state of Arkansas have volunteered time and energy in many ways that have greatly impacted the communities. For this reason the volunteers should be given recognition.

The Presidential Student Service Awards have been used throughout the state as one form of recognition. The President's Student Service Award is a White House initiative that recognizes young Americans with awards for outstanding community service, while encouraging more young people to serve. For more information about these particular awards, please visit www.student-service-awards.org.

The Arkansas Department of Education, in partnership with the Arkansas Service Commission and the Arkansas Department of Volunteerism, are encouraging all schools, churches, non-profits and any organizations or agencies that engage youth in service to, in some way, recognize the volunteers on April 15th for such extraordinary accomplishments.
