The Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 known as “No Child Left Behind” mandates that all students be assessed in Mathematics and Literacy during grades 9-12. Students with disabilities in the ninth grade who are NOT enrolled in algebra or geometry must be assessed with the Grade 9 Mathematics Portfolio Assessment.
During the annual review for students with disabilities who will be enrolled in 9th grade mathematics in 2005-2006 and will be assessed with the Grade 9 Mathematics Portfolio, the IEP team must use the standards for Algebra I and Geometry to link the framework to the appropriate student activities. This change was necessary due to the revision of the Arkansas Mathematics Curriculum Framework that will be in use during the 2005-2006 school year.
More details regarding the portfolio preparation will be made available in the future.
