The Arkansas Department of Education, Special Education, Project for Children with Deafblindness, in collaboration with University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) is offering a Summer Workshop on Severe Disabilities, including Deafblindness on June 28-30, 2005. This workshop is designed for paraprofessionals, teachers and other educators who work with students who have vision and hearing losses and for parents or other family members who have a child with vision and hearing losses.

The presenter is Dr. Sherry Shaw, Assistant Professor, UALR. Registration costs are being paid by the Arkansas Department of Education, Special Education, Project for Children with Deafblindness. A stipend of $150 is available for the first 25 parents and public school educators (paraprofessionals, teachers, supervisors, consultants, etc.) to register. All others are welcome to attend at no charge. Participants must attend all three days of the workshop to receive the stipend and to receive 15 Professional Development hours.

This workshop, “Summer Workshop on Severe Disabilities, Including Deafblindness,” will provide participants with basic knowledge to effectively work with children who have combined hearing and vision loss. This is a repeat of the 2004 summer workshop with some updated information.

The workshop will focus on the following:

• Behavior and Communication
• Person-Centered Planning
• Orientation and Mobility
• Families and Schools
• Creating Reactive Environments Where A Child Can Interact
• Developing Concepts for a Child with Sensory Impairment
• Parents Rights Under IDEA
• Recognizing Early Signs
• Early Intervention
• Assistive Technology

The Summer Workshop will be held at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, College of Education, Dickinson Hall, Auditorium. Participants can park on the parking deck for $0.50 a day (exact change needed). Meals will be the responsibility of the participant.

Arrival and sign-in will be from 8:30 a.m.– 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 28.

Class times are:
Tuesday, June 28, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday, June 29, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Thursday, June 30, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
