Because of the catastrophic effects of the recent hurricane that hit the gulf coastal states, many victims are seeking refuge in Arkansas. Due to the number of people seeking shelter in our state, many school districts have inquired about using school buses to assist these victims.
After consultation with the Governor's office, the Division of Public School Academic Facilities and Transportation has agreed to allow those districts that receive requests from governmental agencies acting in an official capacity to use school buses on a limited basis for hurricane relief. If a public school chooses to use school buses to assist in relief effots, the following criteria shall be used:
1) Notify insurance carrier prior to use.
2) Transport only within the State of Arkansas.
3) Use only district-employed drivers.
4) Do not charge for transporting. (Reimbursement for fuel is allowable.)
5) Do not interrupt daily routes to or from school in order to transport victims.
