The purpose of this memorandum is to provide information regarding the 2005 School Improvement notification and appeal process.

Step 1 Notification:
* Superintendents and school board presidents are notified of proposed School Improvement status for the district and schools in the district (superintendents, please make the school board president aware of the ADE notification of School Improvement status)

* Superintendents notify school principals of proposed School Improvement status for the principal's school

Step 2 Appeal Process:
* After reviewing the proposed School Improvement Status report for the school district or school(s), if district/school wishes to appeal the status report, please complete a separate appeal form (attached) per each district and/or school that will appeal

* Complete correction Excel spreadsheet (attached) - directions for completing the correction Excel spreadsheet are attached

*Prepare justification memorandum

*E-mail the above documents to adeinfo@arkedu.k12.ar.us. It is important the subject line reads as follows: AYP, followed by name of district, followed by district LEA# (AYP - district name, district LEA#)

NOTE: If it is believed that the previously submitted correction Excel spreadsheets and previously submitted justification for those corrections satisfy the appeal, it is not necessary to resubmit. In this case, the completed appeal form would be the only document e-mailed as part of Step 2.

If mistakes were made on the correction sheets that were submitted or failed to submit corrections, please complete the correction Excel spreadsheet and prepare a justification memorandum. In order to provide accurate results, the correction sheets must follow the protocol and contain all the required information per the directions.

Previously submitted corrections received after the deadline may not be reflected in the School Improvement reports.

Step 3 Certification:
* Complete superintendent certification (attached)
Include the name and LEA# of all schools and/or districts submitting an appeal

All appeals must be submitted no later than 4:30 PM at the close of business on the 30th calendar day from receipt of the superintendent/school board president notification.

All appeals will be reviewed by an appeal panel. Appeals will be addressed in the following priority:

1. district/schools in School Improvement
2. schools in Alert
