Section 111 of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 requires school food authorities (SFAs) to implement a school food safety plan for the preparation and service of school meals served to children in the school year beginning July 1, 2005. The program must be based on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles and conform to guidance issued by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). All SFAs must have a fully implemented school food safety plan that complies with HACCP principles no later than the end of the 2005 – 2006 school year.

The Child Nutrition Unit (CNU) has designated the next Distance Learning Workshop to help Arkansas schools implement a school food safety plan in accordance with the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 requirement. Join the CNU for the Workshop entitled “Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)” on February 2, 2006, from 1:00pm until 4:00pm as Barbara Smith, Assistant Director of the Child Nutrition Unit, and Rita Hamilton, Area Specialist, review the components of Standard Operating Procedures. During this Workshop, participants will have the opportunity to develop SOPs for each preparation and serving site.

The Workshop is open to all child nutrition directors and managers. The registration fee is $10.00 for each participant. The REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS JANUARY 27, 2006.

The educational cooperatives that will be hosting the training sessions are listed on the attached registration form. Districts must indicate which educational cooperative the participant will attend.

The training will be cancelled at any site that does not have a registered participant by the deadline. Districts should copy and complete a separate registration form for each participant.

Each participant will need to bring a copy of his or her school’s completed Standard Operating Procedures. Any additional materials needed for the Workshop will be mailed.
