The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) is pleased to cooperate with the White House and the National Science Foundation (NSF) in conducting the nomination and selection process for the 2006 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The 2006 Presidential Awards will be for K-6 mathematics and science teachers. Each awardee will receive a $10,000 UNRESTRICTED CASH AWARD paid directly to the awardee from the National Science Foundation.

Teachers applying for the 2005 PAEMST must be nominated. Anyone (e.g., principals, teachers, students, and other members of the general public) may nominate a teacher. Self-nominations will not be accepted. The form will be submitted to the state coordinator and a copy sent to the nominee.

The Presidential Award includes the following:

(1) the unrestricted award of $10,000 cash to each teacher; and
(2) recognition events in Washington, D.C. in March 2006, which will include:
a. an awards ceremony and presidential citation,
b. meetings with leaders in government and education,
c. sessions to share ideas and teaching experiences, and
d. receptions and banquets to honor recipients.

Administrators and teachers may download a copy of the application from the NSF website, www.paemst.org, or print the attached forms. PAEMST can provide additional information. The application deadline is May 1, 2006. Completed applications, postmarked by May 1, 2006, must be submitted to the state coordinator.
