The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) is pleased to announce a Fourth-Year Transition to College Mathematics School Pilot Training workshop to be conducted on July 17-21, 2006, at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) in Conway. The workshop will be offered for districts selecting to implement the new fourth-year high school mathematics course during the 2006-2007 academic school year or later. This training is designed to prepare teachers to utilize materials of choice to meet the objectives outlined by the Transition to College Mathematics syllabus. The training will focus on ways to immerse students in application problems using investigative mathematics so students will better understand the technological world of today.

Secondary mathematics certification and workshop training, July 17-21, 2006, are required for teachers of this course. The districts deciding to implement the new course during the 2006-2007 academic school year or later are required to send teachers to the scheduled workshop. A certificate of endorsement for workshop training is required for teachers of this course. Teachers meeting the approval to teach this course must follow the ADE approved course syllabus.

Registration for the workshop is being handled by Dr. Linda Griffith, Arkansas Center for Mathematics and Science Education, at UCA in Conway. Attached is an application that should be sent to Dr. Linda Griffith by June 30, 2006. Pre-registration is required. The registration fee for the workshop will be $200 without on-campus housing, breakfast and dinner or $330 with on-campus housing and all meals. The registration covers cost of instruction and materials provided to participants. All participants wishing to stay on the university’s campus during the workshop will need to provide bedding and linens. Expenses other than those mentioned are the responsibility of the participant. Questions regarding registration should be directed to Belinda Robertson at belindar@mail.uca.edu or 501-450-3621. A $25.00 fee will be deducted from all refunds for cancellations after June 30, 2006.

Transition to College Mathematics Workshop is an eligible activity for Title II-A Funds. At the discretion of each local district, Improving Teacher Quality, Title II-A Funds may be used to pay the registration fee and expenses for teachers to attend this workshop.
