The Division of Public School Academic Facilities and Transportation was recently notified by the State of Arkansas Department of Emergency Management that in the past few months there have been incidences where schools have consolidated or closed facilities and chemicals were left in the vacated facility. Unfortunately, the chemicals were stolen by students for off-site experiments which resulted in hazardous materials clean-up by the county. School districts are reminded that it is extremely important that chemicals not be left on vacated campuses or unsecured on occupied campuses.

The State Emergency Response Commission (SERC) is asking for assistance in reporting hazardous substances kept on school grounds. School districts should report substances via TIER II software and file reports with the following entities: Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM), County Office of Emergency Management in which the school is located, and local fire departments.

Districts are reminded that hazardous substances to be reported are both fuels and chemicals. Schools that store over 1700 gallons of fuel on site in above ground storage tank facilities must report to ADEM. It is also critical that local fire departments be notified and have up-to-date lists of chemicals located in science labs and elsewhere on school grounds. For more specific information schools may contact Mr. Kenny Harman and Ms. Tracy Stobaugh with ADEMís Office of Hazardous Materials at (501) 730-9750.
