ACT 1220 of 2003 mandates that Arkansas schools begin the implementation of 30 minutes daily and/or 150 minutes weekly of physical activity in the 2006 - 2007 school year. For assistance in this mandate, the Arkansas Department of Education, Office of Coordinated School Health, will sponsor the conference: “Meeting the Physical Activity Requirements of ACT 1220." This one-day conference will be held 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14th, 2006, at the AGORA Conference Center, 705 E. Siebenmorgen Road, Conway, Arkansas.
Building level principals, grades K-12, and a classroom teacher from each building are encouraged to attend. The purpose of this workshop is to clarify the mandate concerning Act 1220, provide strategies for classroom teachers integrating physical activity into the core subjects, to understand the difference between physical education and physical activity and how the two can help each other, and how to use the school health index to benefit physical activity and physical education programs. It is strongly encouraged that the building level principal and/or the classroom teacher take the information learned back to individual schools for training of staff within that school.
Advance registration is required. Please mail or fax the attached registration form to the Arkansas Department of Education, Attn: Laura McDowell, 2020 W. 3rd Street, Room 320, Little Rock, Arkansas 72201 or fax the registration form to 501-683-3611.
