Act 1584 of 2007 amends Arkansas Code Title 6, Chapter 21 by adding an additional section; Ark. Code Ann. Sec. 6-21-116.
Section 6-21-116 provides that all building plans for new public school facilities may include a tornado shelter or a designated reinforced area designed to withstand tornadoes and high-speed winds. The act further stipulates that school districts shall be required to generate funds to meet the requirements of this section but that the school districts may apply for grant funds to assist in the construction of a tornado shelter or designated reinforced area. Rules will be promulgated to implement the requirements of this section.
School districts are advised that Federal grants may be available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
