State and School officials recognize that transportation is one of the most vital and visible support systems for Arkansas public school students. Every school day, more than 5,000 school buses are driven over 250,000 miles transporting approximately 325,000 students to and from Arkansas schools. Ark. Code Ann. § 6-19-117(f)(as amended by Act 999 of 2007) designates the third week of October as “School Bus Safety Week.”

In addition, National School Bus Safety Week will be observed the week of October 20-24, 2008. This week is set aside each year to promote school bus safety for all students.

In an effort to promote school bus safety, the Division of Public School Academic Facilities and Transportation will mail National School Bus Safety posters to each district. For additional copies of the poster fax a request to National School Bus Safety Week posters at 518-218-0867. This Year’s activity booklet can be downloaded from the National Association of Pupil Transportation (NAPT) web site at www.napt.org. It is recommended that each district use the items to educate students about school bus safety and the dangers of loading and unloading students.

Districts are encouraged to participate in Arkansas School Bus Safety Week and National School Bus Safety Week (October 20-24, 2008) by conducting activities for students.
