In order to better assist school districts in scheduling distance learning courses, the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) annually works with Arkansas school districts and State Distance Learning Providers to determine the best possible distance learning bell schedule(s) and calendar to meet the scheduling needs of school districts. A committee of administrators was formed to provide recommendation and guidance for the 2009-2010 Distance Learning Bell Schedule and School Calendar. The Distance Learning Advisory Committee of Administrators and the Distance Learning Content Providers have finalized the 2009-2010 Arkansas Distance Learning Initiative Academic Calendar and Bell Schedule. Schools were surveyed and the data reported were utilized to determine the calendar and bell schedule that best represented the majority of distance learning users in Arkansas.

The following Content Providers are:

Arch Ford Distance Learning Center in Plumerville
Arkansas Department of Education Distance Learning Center in Maumelle
Arkansas Distance Learning Preparatory Center in Walnut Ridge
Arkansas Early College High School in Monticello
Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, & the Arts Office of Distance Education in Hot Springs
Arkansas Center for Strategic Foreign Languages in Farmington
Arkansas Virtual High School in Enola
Dawson Center for Distance Learning in Arkadelphia
Great Rivers Education Service Cooperative in Helena

The 2009-2010 Academic Calendar and Bell Schedule are attached to this Commissioner’s Memo.

There will be two Distance Learning Provider Bell Schedules for the 2009-2010 school year. Schools can choose from class times that accommodate both the eight 45-minute period day AND the seven 50- minute period day. Each content provider will offer classes on both bell schedules without sacrificing instructional time. The Distance Learning Provider Bell Schedule does not reflect a lunch period. Each day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m. Districts should use these class times as a guide for local bell schedules.

UPCOMING DATES OF INTEREST:

FEBRUARY 17, 2009 - All Distance Learning Content Providers will have master schedules of courses offered ready for public view so that districts can plan master schedules around individual school curriculum needs. The courses will be listed on the Arkansas Distance Learning Portal at http://ardl.k12.ar.us. REGISTRATION WILL NOT OPEN AT THIS TIME.

FEBRUARY 23, 2009 – Registration for the Arkansas Early College High School opens.

APRIL 6, 2009 – Registration for all other Arkansas distance learning content providers opens.
