The School Nutrition Association (SNA) sponsors National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) to help school districts increase breakfast participation. March 2-6, 2009, is NSBW and the 2009 theme is “Power Up With School Breakfast."
Child Nutrition Directors should use this opportunity to get students excited about eating breakfast. Students eating a good breakfast are more alert to receive the subject matter that teachers are presenting. Therefore, students have an opportunity to perform better in the classrooms. Not only are students’ minds more alert to receive this information, but studies document behavior problems have decreased due to eating breakfast.
The Child Nutrition Unit (CNU) of the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) challenges the Child Nutrition Directors to plan activities for NSBW. Visit the SNA web site at www.schoolnutrition.org.
The SNA website contains the following NSBW features:
1. Design a School Breakfast Superhero
2. Tools You Can Use
3. Power Up Participation Sweepstakes
4. Power Up Promotional Merchandise
5. About Power Up
Featured menus for the week include food items that should stir up the interest of students. On the website, click on Menus and the Power Up Recipes will be available.
