The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) announces a variety of Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) professional development opportunities for teachers in Grades K-3. CGI is a professional development opportunity that helps teachers and administrators learn to base mathematics instruction on children’s thinking. CGI will enhance instruction with any mathematics curriculum, program, and or textbook. Classification of word problems and solution strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value, and algebra are discussed. The problem types and levels of developmental thinking provide a framework for teachers to assess children's mathematical thinking. As a result, teachers can plan instruction so that children continually progress with conceptual understanding and improved problem solving skills. CGI supports effective instruction and is embedded throughout the K-8 Arkansas Mathematics Frameworks with particular attention to Number and Operations Standards 1, 2, and 3 and Algebra Standards 5, 6, and 7.

Enrollment in CGI year 1 is open to classroom teachers, special education teachers, mathematics coaches, mathematics specialists, Title I teachers responsible for teaching mathematics, and administrators. Training capacity is limited and early enrollment is encouraged. Priority enrollment will be given to participants from schools in School Improvement. Participation requires a seven-day commitment (four–five days in the summer with two-three follow-up days during the school year).

Enrollment in CGI year 2 is open to classroom teachers, special education teachers, mathematics coaches, mathematics specialists, Title I teachers responsible for teaching mathematics, and administrators who have completed CGI year 1 and have used CGI strategies in the classroom. Participation requires a five-day commitment (three-four days in the summer with one-two follow-up days during the school year).

Enrollment in CGI year 3 is open to classroom teachers, special education teachers, mathematics coaches, mathematics specialists, Title I teachers responsible for teaching mathematics, and administrators who have completed CGI year 1, CGI year 2, and have used CGI strategies in the classroom. Participation requires a seven-day commitment (three days in the summer with four follow-up days during the school year).

For registration information, training dates, and training locations contact the mathematics specialist at the local education service cooperative. For tri-county districts, contact the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) mathematics specialist.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE for this workshop is March 31, 2009.
