Recently, as a result of a monitoring visit by the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE), some definitions of highly qualified teachers (HQT) have been reviewed. The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) will be revisiting some HQT definitions and making changes. One of the items that will be changed is the allowance of secondary Special Education, Alternative Learning Environment and Juvenile Detention Center teachers to use the current Multi-subject ARHOUSSE document (and the Praxis II: 20146 Middle School: Content Knowledge test) to demonstrate content knowledge. Beginning fall 2009 these options will not be available to teachers teaching in secondary classrooms/environments. Over the next couple of months the ADE will be convening meetings to resolve this issue. Personnel will be informed as resolutions are established.
