The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), in partnership with the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) Mashburn Center for Learning, announces an opportunity for educators to participate in the Arkansas Adolescent Literacy Intervention (AALI). The AALI is a researched validated methodology based on the Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) developed by Dr. Don Deshler, contributor to Reading Next, and the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning (KU-CRL). More information about Reading Next can be found online at http://www.all4ed.org/files/ReadingNext.pdf

This learning opportunity will provide high quality professional development in Learning Strategies (LS), on-site coaching, and fidelity checks. The LS are Tier II and III interventions designed to enable struggling learners, including those with disabilities, to be successful in a rigorous core instructional program. The Learning Strategies curriculum consists of three instructional strands: the Acquisition strand which allows students to gain information from written material; the Storage strand which helps students organize, store, and retrieve information; and the Expression strand which enables students to effectively communicate in writing. Learning Strategies instruction is most often provided in small group settings and has been used successfully in intervention classrooms for struggling learners as well as special education pull-out programs. The SIM has been clinically tested for over 30 years, and significant gains in achievement for students with and without mild disabilities have been demonstrated when implemented with fidelity.

AALI professional development in Learning Strategies will be offered on-site or regionally. The estimated cost is $1,000 per person per year. For individuals interested in this professional learning opportunity, please complete the interest form below and e-mail to kcalhoon@uca.edu. An AALI representative will provide interested persons with more information upon receipt of the interest form.
