Ark. Code Ann. § 6-19-110 and Act 1206 of 2009 require a bus safety plan to be developed within the jurisdiction of each school district and in concert with local law enforcement officials and prosecuting attorneys.
To assist in this initiative, the Division, with the assistance of a group of school district transportation directors, has developed a Safety Plan Template which may be used by school districts in drafting the safety plans. The template is a guide only. School districts may structure the local plan in any way that meets the local needs.
To assist in the formulation of the conduct of the plan, a reference web site is presented: http://www.nasdpts.org/documents/hazard.pdf. This site contains a report entitled; “Identification and Evaluation of School Bus Route and Hazard Marking Systems” produced by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services.
There was no deadline established for the completion of the plans by law. It is anticipated that the excellent state school district record of school bus operations would be greatly enhanced by this plan requirement and that school districts would take advantage of this opportunity of coordinating bus operations with local officials expeditiously.
