The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), in conjunction with the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Arkansas State Teachers Association, is pleased to announce the MATHCOUNTS Club Program and the MATHCOUNTS Competition for the 2009-2010 school year. Founded in 1983, the MATHCOUNTS Foundation is a non-profit organization which provides opportunities for middle school students to excel in mathematics and problem solving.

The MATHCOUNTS Club Program (The Club) is a math enrichment program that will, upon request, provide schools with free problem sets that can be used to supplement regular classroom activities. This program is also designed to foster group activities where students can work together in order to earn recognition and awards. The Club Program provides schools with the structure and activities to hold regular meetings for a math club. Depending on the level of student and teacher involvement, a school may receive a recognition plaque or banner and be entered into a drawing for prizes. This program may be used by schools as a stand-alone program or incorporated into the student preparation for the MATHCOUNTS Competition. Additional information is available online.

The MATHCOUNTS Competition Program provides opportunities to compete against peers from other schools, cities, and states. Middle schools nationwide are provided with the MATHCOUNTS School Handbook (Vol. 1), which contains sample problems and guidance on setting up a MATHCOUNTS team. Additional materials including the MATHCOUNTS School Handbook (Vol. 2), previous chapter and state competition materials, and information about grants available to pay registration fees are available online.

To learn more about these exciting opportunities for students, please visit the MATHCOUNTS Web site at https://mathcounts.org.

Schools may contact Mr. Zane Lewis, Professional Engineer, the Arkansas MATHCOUNTS coordinator, at 479-443-3404, or at zlewis@mwyusa.com. Financial assistance is available from the Arkansas State Teachers Association. Please contact Mrs. Kristen Boswell, Director at 877-742-2782 or info@astapro.org, or use the attached grant application form and guidelines to apply.
