The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) is pleased to announce two Fourth-Year Transition to College Mathematics School Training Workshops to be conducted this summer. The first workshop will take place June 21-25, 2010 at Crossett High School in Crossett, Arkansas, from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. each day. The second workshop will take place August 2-6, 2010 at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA), in Conway, Arkansas from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. each day. Participants should choose one workshop to attend. The workshops will be offered for districts selecting to implement the fourth-year high school mathematics course during the 2009-2010 school year or later. These trainings are designed to prepare teachers to utilize materials of choice to meet the objectives outlined by the Transition to College Mathematics course framework. These trainings will focus on ways to immerse students in application problems using investigative mathematics so students will better understand the technological world of today.

All teachers of Transition to College Mathematics must have a certificate of endorsement from a Fourth-Year Transition to College Mathematics School Training Workshop and must be licensed to teach secondary mathematics. Districts that decide to implement this course for the 2010-2011 academic year or later, but do not have licensed secondary mathematics teachers with certificates of endorsements from a past Fourth-Year Transition to College Mathematics School Training Workshop, must send teachers to one of the scheduled workshops. Upon successful completion of the training workshop, teachers will receive the required certificate of endorsement. Teachers obtaining the licensure endorsement to teach the course must follow the ADE-approved course framework for Transition to College Mathematics.

Registration for these workshops is being handled by Anita Luyet, Arkansas Center for Mathematics and Science Education, at UCA in Conway. Attached are the applications for both of these trainings. These registration forms should be sent to Ms. Luyet by June 1, 2010 (Crossett High School) and June 15, 2010 (UCA). Pre-registration is required. If participants wish to register online, they may do so at the following links: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewformformkey=dFFScEtuWkRTYTUyWFpHZFFzUnZQS3c6MA for the Crossett workshop or https://spreadsheets0.google.com/viewformformkey=dEpHeVducFZLeU93Q1BLY2NhN0xrSHc6MA for the Conway workshop. (If the above links do not work, the pages may be accessed by copying the links and pasting them into your Web browser.)

The registration fee for the workshop in Crossett will be $225 per participant (not including on-campus housing, breakfast, or dinner). The registration for the Conway workshop will be $250 (not including on-campus housing, breakfast, or dinner). These fees cover the cost of instruction and materials provided to participants. A $50 fee will be deducted from all refunds or cancellations after June 1, 2010 for the Crossett High School workshop. A $50 fee will be deducted from all refunds or cancellations after June 15, 2010 for the UCA workshop. Questions regarding the registration should be directed to Anita Luyet at aluyet@uca.edu or 501-450-3426.
