The Arkansas Arts Center will host the Art and the Written Word Teacher Academy on July 31, August 7, August 14, October 9, and November 6. The final workshop will be held April 2, 2011. The event will culminate with a student Poetry Slam scheduled for April 30, 2011, at the Arkansas Arts Center featuring cash prizes. The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Arkansas Arts Center at 501 East 9th Street in Little Rock. This one-day teacher academy will inspire and reinvigorate teachers and students with hands-on, immersive lesson plans designed to teach students how to create original works of poetry and translate poetry into visual images while exploring various periods of art history. These lesson plans are aligned to the Arkansas English language arts and fine arts curriculum frameworks. Lesson plans are designed for grades six through 12.

Teachers will receive the Art and the Written Word Educator Guide and can earn six professional development credits. The cost for the academy is $60, which includes lunch. Call 501-396-0353 to register. Space is limited.

Educators from the Arkansas Arts Center are also willing to come to schools and education service cooperatives to provide teacher academies. Please contact Lou Palermo, curator of education, at lpalermo@arkarts.com or call 501-396-0367 to book an academy.
