A review of the College Board’s recommendations and requirements for Advanced Placement (AP) courses, including AP Biology, has recently been conducted at the Arkansas Department of Education. According to page four of the College Board’s AP Biology Course Description, the College Board has designed AP Biology as a course “...to be taken by students after the successful completion of a first course in high school biology and one in high school chemistry as well.” Therefore, the high school Biology course aligned to the Arkansas Biology Framework as approved by the State Board of Education shall be used to fulfill the Smart Core Biology requirement in all schools. AP Biology will not substitute for Biology.
