The Comprehensive Intervention Model Institute, sponsored by the Center for Literacy at UALR, will be held at the Hilton Little Rock Metro Center from June 28 – July 2.
The comprehensive intervention model was recommended as a research-based response to intervention approach in the August 2009 Reading Today and is featured in two recent publications from the International Reading Association, Approaches to RtI: Collaborative Practices for Improving K-12 Literacy, edited by Marjorie Y. Lipson and Karen K. Wixson, and RtI in Literacy: Responsive and Comprehensive, edited by Peter H. Johnston.
The Comprehensive Intervention Model Institute is designed to provide teachers (Reading Recovery, Title One, English language learners, special education, classroom) who work with struggling readers with an intervention framework for teaching these children. The training is in-depth and provides teachers with the background for implementing the small group interventions. Each afternoon, school teams will work on a response-to-interventio plan using the comprehensive intervention model. It is recommended that schools send a team that consists of the classroom, reading resource, and special education teachers as well as administrators and any other persons who works with struggling readers. This group can become the basis of response to intervention leadership team for the school.
