This memo is intended to clarify Commissioner’s Memo COM-10-207 on Advanced Placement (AP) Biology and Smart Core requirements. Any student who has taken AP Biology during or prior to the 2009-2010 school year and received credit for the course may use this course as a substitution for Biology in the Smart Core curriculum. Beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, AP Biology shall not substitute for Biology as required in the Smart Core curriculum.

In addition, Pre-AP Biology may continue to substitute for Biology in the Smart Core curriculum as long as the course is aligned to the Biology course framework approved by the State Board of Education as part of the Arkansas science curriculum framework.
