CHARLIE MAY SIMON BOOK AWARD

I. Results of Voting - Winning Book

"Frindle" by Clements is the first place winner in this year's competition for the Charlie May Simon (CMS) Children's Book Award, with 4,693 votes. Clements will be invited to receive the CMS Medallion on Thursday, September 23, 1999.

"Tornado" by Byars is the first runner-up, with 4,160 votes. Byars will be invited to receive the CMS Honor Book Award on Thursday, September 23, 1999.

"Shiloh Season" by Naylor is the second runner-up, with 4,123 votes.

Voting this year by students in grades four, five, and six was with a total participation of 29,929 votes cast.

The award is under the sponsorship of the Arkansas Elementary School Council of the Arkansas Department of Education and other cooperating organizations.

Arkansas Diamond Primary Book Award

II. Results of Voting - Winning Book

"Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink" by De Groat is the first place winner in this year's competition for the Arkansas Diamond Primary Children's Book award, with 13,251 votes. De Groat will be invited to receive the Arkansas Diamond Primary Book Award on Thursday, September 23, 1999.

"Lost" by Johnson is the first runner-up, with 4,290 votes. Johnson will be invited to receive the CMS Honor Book Award on Thursday, September 23, 1999.

"Temple Cat" by Clements is the second runner-up, with 4,010 votes.

Voting this year by students in grades Kindergarten, first and second grades was with a total participation of 52,046 votes cast.

The award is under the sponsorship of the Arkansas Elementary School Council of the Arkansas Department of Education and other cooperating organizations.

September CMS and Young Writer's Award Banquet

The annual Charlie May Simon Banquet will be held at Sherwood Forest, 1111 West Maryland Avenue, North Little Rock, on Thursday, September 23, 1999, 6:00 p.m Further information will be mailed in August.

In addition, we will acknowledge, recognize and showcase the work of the students who won awards in the Arkansas Elementary School Council Young Writer's Award.
