Please find attached a further definition of the algebra and geometry core, based on our state standards. These documents, along with the Arkansas Mathematics Framework, will be used as the criteria for the end-of-level algebra and geometry testing. All students will participate in the end-of-level algebra and geometry testing except those whose IEP specifies that the end-of-level algebra and geometry testing is inappropriate.
Students may complete the algebra and geometry requirement through a variety of course combinations. It is essential that school districts guarantee that instruction in algebra and geometry is focused on the standards in the Mathematics Framework and in the Algebra and Geometry Core, whatever the course sequence taken by students. Please note, too, that it is the application and use of knowledge and skills in algebra and geometry which will be emphasized in state testing. Classroom instruction and assessment, therefore, should stress such application in a variety of problem-solving situations.
A second assessment-related purpose for this communication regards the requirement to create and submit a plan for including state criterion referenced test scores into each local grading system by October 1, 1998. Districts are released from this requirement until further notice is given.
There is a paper attachment to this memo and it will be delivered in the next bulk mail.
