Make learning connect to the real world for SMART START! Apply for a Nifty Nutrition grant by February 15, 2000. Nifty Nutrition With Skill Integration Activities, a curriculum for grades K-6 is correlated to the SAT 9 Objectives (See attached samples). These grants include turn-key curriculum materials for each classroom; equipment kits worth $300 will be provided (one time only) per building and will require a minimum three hour in-service for all classroom teachers and the school child nutrition manager. An additional meeting for the Nifty Contact Person and the Food Service Representative will be scheduled before April 15, 2000. This meeting will be in Little Rock and travel mileage for one car/district will be paid. As part of the grant the school cafeteria will furnish the food required for learning experiences thus the signature of the district child nutrition director is required. These noncompetitive first-come/first-serve grants are limited by the USDA Team Nutrition Training (TNT) Grant amount.

Schools will receive classroom curriculum teacher guides valued at approx. $65 per curriculum, per classroom, grades one through six. Supporting the Arkansas Smart Start Initiative, the Nifty program provides sequential learning experiences and integrates "hands-on" food experiences with language arts, reading, and math skills while teaching nutrition concepts. Nifty encourages children to accept a wide variety of foods and to gain a foundation of healthy eating habits.

See attached grant application for program details. Paper attachments will be sent in bulk mail. Please check with your Superintendent's office for these attachments. The schedule and locations of Summer in-service training will be provided when grant schools are notified by February 15, 2000. No warrant will be issued; therefore, no financial bookkeeping is required.
Curriculum Teacher Guides and Equipment Kits will be delivered at the time of the teacher in-service training.
