The GOVERNOR'S COUNCIL ON FITNESS will be celebrating May as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month by hosting two events: The Great Arkansas Workout and Out for Lunch 2000. Of these two events, The Great Arkansas Workout involves elementary students promoting physical fitness. A description is as follows:

THE GREAT ARKANSAS WORKOUT - On Thursday, May 4, 2000, the eighth annual Great Arkansas Workout will take place on the lawn of the state capitol. Over 600 third and fourth graders, representing elementary schools across the state with exemplary physical education programs, will converge on Little Rock for an early morning fast-paced hour of exercise and sports instruction. The music-filled morning will be kicked off by media personalities and elected officials going through a mini workout on treadmills, stair masters and stationary bikes. The students will participate in a warm-up and a short jog around the capitol grounds. Led by some of the state's top coaches and instructors, the students will then be divided into groups and rotated through workout stations that include such activities as gymnastics, taekwondo, volleyball, aerobics, fencing, resistance training and soccer.

If your school has not participated in this event within the last three years, we would like to offer your third and fourth grade physical education students the opportunity to participate in this exciting event. Twelve schools will be randomly selected according to geographic location within the state. Schools should bring no more than 50 students. To ensure the safety of each student, sponsors from each school will be required to accompany the students. This should be a 1:10 sponsor to student ratio. The event will begin PROMPTLY AT 11:00 A.M. and is scheduled to end at 1:00 p.m. Buses should arrive at the capitol between 10:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. to allow for bathroom and water breaks for the students. Since lunch will not be provided, it is recommended that students eat a snack on the bus before arriving in Little Rock.

If your school is interested in participating, please contact: Alissa Beach, Coordinator, Arkansas Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, 4815 West Markham Street, Slot 36, Little Rock, AR 72205-3867, to obtain a registration packet for the Great Arkansas Workout.

The registration form must be filled out and returned to the address listed above no later than WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15, 2000.

Schools will be notified of participation by April 4, 2000.
